Meet Over the Moon

It’s a funny story how we got Over the Moon.  We saw them somewhere….maybe on Facebook and really liked their music but then found out they lived in Alberta.  So we got in contact asking if they ever came out to play in Ontario and if they did, would they like to come to Desboro Music Hall.  Craig got back to me and said in fact they’re planning a little tour of Ontario.  Then he hits me with the fact that he used to live in Desboro!  What are the chances that we contact a band in Alberta and it ends up being someone from Desboro…the tiny little community of Desboro?!  I love it.  It means they were meant to come play for us and I’m glad we found each other.

Over the Moon is made up of Suzanne Levesque and Craig Bignell.  They have a wonderful story of how they met, fell in love and started playing together.  Craig was trying to play a song in front of a group and was nervous and stumbling a little when Suzanne came in with her bass and voice and they created magic.  From that moment on, they sang and played together and eventually even got married!  And their music has the same flavour as their story; part beauty and part magic.  There’s wonderful harmonies, various instruments, a little bit of country, a little bit of swing and a little bit of folk all mixed in to create magic. Check out their cover of “Love Hurts”

Don’t miss out.  Catch them on Friday June 1, 2018 at the Hall.

Meet The Kelly Song Collective

The Kelly Song Collective is made up of brothers, Joe and John Kelly.  They were born in Toronto.  They got into music later in life and then John moved up near Sudbury for a job.  So how did they become a band?  One of them suggested they do a “Song-a-Week” where they took turns putting up a video of a song they wrote and eventually they formed a band.  Then they created an album, “Unless and Until” with assorted friends playing on it including Chris Coole on banjo (who will be here with The Lonesome Ace Stringband in September for a show).  They both wrote the songs.  As a side note, John was the winner of the Canadian Songwriting Competition 2018 Lyrics Category for his song, “Four Colours”.

But how do they arrange to play together when one is in Sudbury and one is in Toronto?  It’s a delicate act of balancing family time with jobs and gigs.  A challenge we understand well.   Desboro Music Hall is our little venture to share our passion for music with our home community and at times it’s been like juggling: trying to balance our day jobs, our kids, our social occasions, the hall and the commute (Phil and Josephine living 2 1/2 hours away).  As a side note, it’s a wonderful experience and a pleasure to be contributing to Desboro and the music community in this way.  We are so thankful for the support of our ticket holders and those encouraging us forward.  I imagine the Kelly Song Collective runs up against many of these same problems but their passion for their music and their desire to share their musical talent spurs them on.  It will be our treat to hear them and encourage them on in their venture.

Here is the song that John won his Canadian Songwriting Competition Award.

Meet Zachary Lucky

If you like reflective, good ole country music sung with a smooth baritone, Zachary Lucky’s music will be perfect you.  It’s the kind of music that is ideal for sitting around a campfire at the end of a long week, the kind of music to unwind and relax to.  Zach’s deep voice captures you within his storytelling, keeping you mesmerized.  It will be a night of “unapologetically old school country” music.  In 2017, he was nominated for Solo Artist of the Year at the Canadian Folk Music Awards and we’re lucky he’s come to Desboro.  Originally from Saskatoon, country music is deep in his bloodlines as his grandfather and grandmother were Smilin’ Johnnie Lucky and Eleanor Dahl, Canadian country legends.  Don’t miss your chance to catch him.  It’s a great weekend show.

Meet Madison Galloway

Our opener, Madison may be young but she has been on dozens of stages and has already shared the stage with such names as 54-40 and The Sadies.  She’s always been musical and quite talented.  Self-taught on harmonica, ukulele and banjo, she can also play the guitar and piano.  But don’t forget her voice…she can rock out like Janis Joplin or draw you in like Joni Mitchell with her versatile voice.  This is what makes her concerts such fun.  This is one girl to watch out for!  Check out her two videos below and see how different they can be from each other. Then come join us on Friday April 20 to see this all live!

A new season at Desboro Music Hall is about to begin on Friday April 20th.  We’re also very proud to present an all-female line-up for our Season Opener with The O’Pears and Madison Galloway.

We are so excited to hear the O’Pears in our Hall.  Our Hall was made for 3-part harmony and acapella.  If you’ve never been to our Hall, picture an arched wood ceiling with wood wainscotting and imagine how the sound and harmonies will echo and surround you where you sit.  The O’Pears music will be the perfect complement to our Hall, creating a warm, intimate show that will draw people in.  It’s going to be an exquisite night of music.  Listen to them talk about their album below.  Then come out to the Hall to experience it live as there’s nothing like it.

Meet Ken Yates

A young up-and-coming singer-songwriter, Ken Yates has been on the music scene since 2011.  He has generated quite a following through house concerts and touring extensively throughout Canada and the States.  Through his music, he’s able to create stories that draw you in and keep you entertained.  He has just released his second album, “Huntsville” in 2016. He was able to work with Jim Bryson on this album and with Jim’s input, he was allowed to relax and try different things, like playing with a band.  Although, he mostly plays solo shows, here is a video of his song, “High on You Under the Moon” with a full band.  (and who knows…maybe you’ll see him back in Desboro with a band backing him)

He was just at Summerfolk in Owen Sound in August and if you missed him (or really liked him), now is your chance to see him in an intimate setting without distraction.  Come on out to the show on Sat Sept 16.

Meet Naomi Bristow

Naomi is a small town girl from a farming background like many of us from Desboro.  Music has been a part of her life since she was young.  At the age of eight, she taught herself to yodel and became a two time winner of Western Music Association’s “Youth Yodeler of the Year”.  Since then she’s gone on to record 10 albums and open for big name artists like Gene Watson, Marty Stuart, Johnny Burke, Stonewall Jackson, The Good Brothers, Larry Mercey, Gordie Tapp, Bobby Bare, Moe Bandy and many other established country artists. Her love of good ole country and gospel music shines through in every show.

Joining her is the phenomonal Steve Piticco who started playing guitar at the age of eleven.  At the age of fifteen, he purchased his Telecaster and that is the same guitar he plays to this day!  Those who haven’t seen him will be amazed at his lightning fast fingers.  Definitely worth coming to see the show.

Here is a video of Naomi doing a newer country song.  Enjoy!  Then come join us at Desboro Music Hall on Sat Sept 16.

Meet Cody Zevenbergen

With a last name like “Zevenbergen”, it’s easy to stand out and be remembered in this area.  (although getting the name actually “right” doesn’t always happen)  So it’ll be easy for you to remember Cody Zevenbergen.  He’s our third performer at our Friday August 25 concert.

Cody has his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Jazz Guitar from York University and moved back to this area to be a music instructor while also performing in many local festivals including Summerfolk and Lupercalia.  He has a wide variety of influences, including rock, blues, country and jazz.  So you won’t know what you’ll get in a concert setting!  (making it half the fun).  He is hoping to record an album of his solo material soon but in the meanwhile, he performs with his band, “Frankie & the Wild Years” and teaches in the Grey-Bruce area.

Come on out to support a local up-and-coming musician.  Check out his video below.

Meet Tragedy Ann

Tragedy Ann, a duo comprising of Liv Cazzola & Braden Phelan, first met romantically.  They didn’t decide to start performing together until later.  Blending guitar, accordion, ukulele and harmonies, they have created their unique sound of thrift-folk.  What is thrift-folk you ask?  It is an amalgamation of well-worn musical fabrics, drawn from traditional folk and blues, that are repurposed and given new life in a bold and dynamic fashion, making it feel both new and well-worn.  Their shows are distinctive, fun and as they say, “known to make audiences laugh, cry, hug complete strangers, and is the only cure for the common cold.”

Their Desboro concert will be their last stop on their “Many Bays, Many Days” tour.  That’s right.  Desboro Music Hall is their closing show!  So if you missed other tour dates, come on out to Desboro on Friday August 25 and find out about thrift-folk.

Meet Shawna Caspi

Shawna Caspi is the veteran in our list of performers.  She has been touring extensively for the last 4 or 5 years so we are lucky to have her make a stop in Desboro.  She even sometimes records her travels in paint!  She likes to take hikes and pictures which she then transforms into paintings (and you can buy some at her shows – each a unique, one-of-a-kind, stop along her journey)

Along with her paintings, she has a rich repertoire of original music, some inspired by her travels.  Shawna has just come out with her fourth album, “Forest Fire” and will be sharing some new music with us!  The CD is available September 1.  “With a commanding stage presence and an inviting charm, she doesn’t need a band to deliver an engaging and energetic show. She has all the sound she needs under her fingertips, with a remarkable fingerstyle guitar technique.”  Her live concerts are intimate moments where it’s more like spending time with a friend, sharing stories and connecting over songs.  Plus, you get to watch her incredible finger stylings on the guitar.

As Shawna says, “I think our show will be the perfect place to come to and relax and reset as summer starts to fade into fall. There’s something that happens in a live music setting that can never be duplicated at home in your PJs watching a screen. Come make friends, meet neighbours, or just sit quietly and reflect in a lovely setting.”

Shawna has been up to the Grey/Bruce area to perform quite a few times and loves it here.  We’re glad to welcome her back and to introduce Desboro to her.  Help us welcome her, get your tickets now.
