Meet Cody Zevenbergen

With a last name like “Zevenbergen”, it’s easy to stand out and be remembered in this area.  (although getting the name actually “right” doesn’t always happen)  So it’ll be easy for you to remember Cody Zevenbergen.  He’s our third performer at our Friday August 25 concert.

Cody has his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Jazz Guitar from York University and moved back to this area to be a music instructor while also performing in many local festivals including Summerfolk and Lupercalia.  He has a wide variety of influences, including rock, blues, country and jazz.  So you won’t know what you’ll get in a concert setting!  (making it half the fun).  He is hoping to record an album of his solo material soon but in the meanwhile, he performs with his band, “Frankie & the Wild Years” and teaches in the Grey-Bruce area.

Come on out to support a local up-and-coming musician.  Check out his video below.

Meet Carter & Ben

We tried to get Ben Turcotte to open one of our shows last year and it just never worked out.  We’re glad that things finally lined up this year and we’re happy to bring this duo to the Desboro Music Hall stage to open for The Redhill Valleys.

Carter Rolland and Ben Turcotte met when they were still in elementary school in Port Elgin.  They played together, with two other friends for a talent show and thus it began.  For the next 8 years, they played as a band and as a duo.  Last year, Carter and Ben decided to lock themselves in Ben’s basement until they had an album.  Sleep, oxygen, and vitamin-d deprived, they emerged in August just in time for Summerfolk (the folk festival in Owen Sound) where their album—“Basement Folk”—made its debut appearance.  Their music is based on their two voices and guitars but expanded to a full band including a horn section for their studio recordings. They love to mix tradition with their own experiences and tastes. This is reflected in their music.

Check out their cover of JJ Cale’s “Lies” and we know you’ll want to come out to see these Port Elgin boys.

Rob Elder is back!

There’s nothing more to say except our favourite local musician is back!  We’re excited to have Rob Elder back to open a show this year.  Last year you’ll remember he opened up our Season for us.  This year, when we were tossing around names for musicians, we knew that our community liked to support local artists.   As we wanted to show our support for our friends, the first name that came up was of course Rob’s name and when we asked him, it worked out nicely that he was able to do this concert, opening for Ben Kunder & Sarah MacDougall.

Check out the video where he plays ALL the instruments!  Talk about multi-talented!  Don’t. Miss. Out.  Support our local musicians and come out on June 17 and catch it all live.

April: Rob Elder and Friends

Rob Elder Collage 3

We have known Rob Elder since he was young as he grew up next door in Chesley and he used to perform at the Ag Society Talent Show in the old Community Centre. As soon as we decided to start the Desboro Music Hall, we knew we wanted Rob to open for us. We asked him to bring along some friends for a great local show and so we have an amazing lineup with Drew McIvor and Larry Jensen. Although we don’t know Drew or Larry personally, their music speaks to us. Drew’s engaging music is catchy and fun. Larry is a poet in music.

All three of these guys have been very active in the music scene in Owen Sound and they’re all very talented. If you didn’t know, Rob can play the guitar but also the drums, bass and keyboard and who knows what else. Drew is involved in so many bands, it’s hard to keep track but can still shine as a solo artist. Larry has released 14 albums over the years and was named Owen Sound Poet Laureate 2015-2017. Yes, that’s right, the talent that will be appearing in Desboro is astounding.

Sometimes we can’t believe that the Music Hall is actually becoming a reality and these three are going to open our Hall for us! We can’t wait to show off the acoustics and the intimacy of the space.

But the day is nearly here! There’s only five more days! Get your tickets soon and come on out to Desboro on April 30th to celebrate our Grand Opening with us. Joining us are Rob Elder, Drew McIvor and Larry Jensen. As a bonus, Larry is also bringing Peter Devlin. (Another awesome guitarist and musician!)

Desboro Music Hall is located in the heart of Desboro at 136215 Grey Road 40, beside the baseball diamonds and in front of the Arena

Tickets are $25 (including H.S.T.)
Tickets are available at:
– Online on their Event Page
– Phone Joe Klages at (519) 377-2358
– Box Office on Saturdays 9am – 12pm
– At the door (if there are any left) on the day of the concert

Update: It’s the little things

We are slowly moving forward.  Our improvements are a bunch of little things that aren’t usually exciting to write about.  It’s the things that need doing but are a little boring to do.  Everyone understands; it’s the maintenance of a house.  We put up plexiglass on the windows to protect the stain glass.  We fixed a bunch of leaks, caulking around the stovepipe and putting in a bit of a new roof at the back.  We’ve tested the furnace.  We fixed some drywall.

We found the old linoleum in the front entrance:

Isn’t that a fun, crazy pattern?  We ended up removing it.  What era do you think it’s from?

I suppose the most exciting thing is that we purchased a bathroom!  Yes, it’s still outside BUT it is heated 🙂  It’s a step up from the outhouse that is out back. We bought it locally from a business in Harriston,  Neilman Enterprises. If you need to buy a mobile washroom, this is better than a port-a-potty and they’re pretty affordable.

As I said before, the washroom is heated!  Everything has to be manually pumped (sink and toilet) to get water but it’s running water, too!  Check them out and support local.

So those are a few of the little but necessary things we’re been doing as the cold weather starts to creep up on us.  We’ll be working hard through the winter months to get ready.  Spring will be here soon and so will our official opening.
