With the background of the Alberta foothills, a woman stands with her double bass and a man stands to her right with a guitar
Featuring award-winning vocal and multi-instrumentalists,
Suzanne Levesque and Craig Bignell

A short while ago the Traveling Mables from Calgary were recording a CD and they hired Craig Bignell to record drums, percussion, and banjo from his home studio in Grey County, Ontario. Everything was as usual for this type of thing, until they asked him to be part of their CD release in Alberta a few months later.   This would be Craig’s first time meeting Suzanne Levesque and they seemed to hit it off right from the start!

A few days after, a close mutual friend (Tom Jackson singer/actor) was having a dinner party at his Calgary home and many of the guests were from Alberta’s music community.  As fate would have it, Craig was staying with Tom at the time, as he was rehearsing for one of Tom’s Huron Carol Tours.  After dinner, people were sitting in a large circle taking turns playing and singing songs. When it came time for (the ever shy) Craig’s turn, he bravely went forth, clutching his acoustic guitar with obvious great strain and fear for his life:)

You see…Craig had made his career as a drummer/percussionist (www.craigbignell.com) and without a huge array of drums, cymbals and various incendiary protecting him, he was sitting utterly alone on a stool, singing some silly love song, completely terrified. Now as luck would have it, Suzanne’s  band was also at this event.  She was watching as Craig struggled on in front of his often overconfident peers.   So from the shadows, Suzanne appeared, bass in hand to rescue Craig by adding her incredible voice and bass playing to this seemingly silly love song.   In doing so, she made him sound and feel so much better…

Craig could just feel himself relax, and he even ventured a smile as his voice returned to normal, losing the Slim Whitman vibrato sound that was present before she appeared…He thought his heart was going to burst!

And that was how the whole thing started. They’ve been singing together ever since and even have people asking if they were related, as their voices blend together so well they sound like family. I guess they are now as they were married five years ago:)

They continue the music and magic of that first night now with Over The Moon and getting rave reviews and gaining new friends and fans wherever they perform.   Their first CD “Moondancer”,  was released in 2017 and it reflects the beautiful two-part harmony style that they are known for and the wide array of acoustic instruments that they play. Most of the songs are original and tell stories of life lived in Southern Alberta’s ranching country. The title song “Moondancer” was given to them by their artist/ranching neighbor Ian Tyson!

Fundraiser for CDCS with the Joy Trio @ Desboro Music Hall

Fundraiser for CDCS with the Joy Trio @ Desboro Music Hall
Come support the Music Department at Chesley District Community School with an evening of music.

The Joy Trio
Presenting Classic Songs from
Gershwin to Patsy Cline

With Special Guests: Students from CDCS

Anika Alexander, Olivia Nagle, Grace Heard, Maisie Heard

The Joy Trio formed just over a year ago. It came together rather by a turn of events as
Mike Grace had arranged a session for Susan to learn about jazz voicings with Don
Buchanan. That plan quickly changed when Susan received an invitation to entertain at a
Christmas party. The planned session became a rehearsal instead and they have played
together as a trio ever since.

Susan Joy Dietrich is proud of her roots in the Desboro Community. Her first time on stage
may have been dancing the Irish Jig with cousins in the Desboro Hall during a Fall Fair
Variety concert. Susan enjoys children, anything music and is especially enjoying this new
venture into jazz as she learns to sing classic tunes from the Great American Songbook.

For over 40 years Don Buchanan has been a keyboardist for many groups and
vocalists in the Grey Bruce area. Through this time he has also been a part of
the music ministry at St. Mary’s church in Owen Sound and has contributed
scores and music direction to several OSLT plays and musicals. Vocal
accompaniment is Don’s favourite musical task and he is honoured to play for
Sue in The Joy Trio.

Mike Grace has been a professional musician most of his life. From
playing ranch parties and road houses in Texas to touring the world with his
trio or quartet, Mike has made performing classical and jazz music his
passion. Among Mike’s most treasured moments in education is being
named a Disney-McDonald’s Performing Arts Teacher in 1996 and being
named University of Michigan Musical Society’s Educator Of The Year.
Among the many performers Mike has had the great fortune to perform with
are Dave Brubeck, Dizzy Gillespie, Mel Torme’, Rob McConnell, Roger Williams,
Urbie Green, Billy Taylor, Clark Terry, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Henry Mancini,
Jimmy Forrest, Peter Appleyard, Randy Brecker, Rosemary Clooney, Sonny Stitt.

I, the Mountain Concert
Sat Nov 4, 2023

I, the Mountain is a four piece indie-folk band based in Kitchener, ON. Known for their joyous harmonies, interactive live performances, and passion for building community through music, the band has built a fanbase of loyal “Mountaineers” across Canada.
Formed by talented vocalists Matt Lamers (guitar) and Matt Rappolt (percussion) at Peterborough’s Trent University, the band has steadily climbed the ranks of the Canadian indie-folk scene, adding Allison Dyjach (keys) and Rory McLachlin (guitar) to complete the lineup.
The group is making waves in Canadian music circles and has performed with internationally renowned acts such as The Strumbellas, Elliott Brood, Born Ruffians, and Busty & the Bass. In 2022, I, the Mountain broke through in the festival scene, winning over crowds at Hillside Festival, Riverfest Elora, Sound of Music Festival, Peterborough Folk Fest, Muskoka Music Festival, and more.

I, the Mountain’s debut album, Little Wild, was released at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and explores themes of togetherness, loss, and the need for escape. The album and its subsequent singles solidified their status as true up-and-comers with “The Boat” and “Coal Mine” getting play on CBC radio and amassing almost 300,000 Spotify streams combined. Now, I, the Mountain is taking the next bold step in their journey by bringing their gorgeous four-part harmonies to stages all across Canada.
